Sound the Trumpeters

Trumpeter Swans grace a small lake west of Rocky. Photo by Mike Mayrl

On our way home on Sunday we caught sight of some Trumpeter Swans. They were on the lake at Beaverdam campground, the same place we'd had our smokie roast earlier that day.
There were several swans as well as several Canada Geese taking advantage of the open water. It was a wonderful sight to behold. I took a few pics from the road, but I was lazy so Mike took my camera and went to the water's edge to get some better photos.
Geese are here all summer, but the swans only stop along here on their way to their northern breeding grounds.
We were lucky to see them.
Thank you, Trumpeters.

just reading your post title made me think:

I need to reread The Trumpet of the Swans.

I loved that book as a child.

Carla, I was thinking of it when I made this post. My husband read it to me as a bedtime story a few years ago.

Thanks for posting this picture. The Trumpeters nest in this area, so I'm looking forward to their arrival soon!

How beautiful are those birds. I'm so out of touch with nature. Thanks for reminding me what's out there.

Mary, I'm pleased to do it.

Now you've reminded me of what else I saw when I saw the cow scratching; farther down the road towards work there was a swan on a pond that's never had any swans before.

Beautiful critters. You much feel very lucky to have them for however brief that may be. Great photo.

Spring surely must be on its way when the migratory birds arrive. Swans are my favourite of the water fowl.

Mary Anne, that's wonderful. I'd keep an eye on that pond if I were you. Could be more surprises.

Hilary, thanks. I do feel lucky. I haven't seen them that often here.

Barbara, it was a magnificent sign of the new season.

We see several species of ducks and geese around here, but very seldom swans of any sort. Those are lovely.

The idea of your husband reading you a bedtime story sounds cozy and loving.

Messymimi, I'll see that Mike hears the compliments.

He's been reading me bedtime stories for 20 years. It's lovely.
