Agatha Heng Thinks I'm An Idiot

Somewhere out there a person going by the name of Agatha Heng thinks I'm an idiot.
Good for her. Or him.
My hotmail account had an email this morning purporting to be from the Windows Live Team warning me my account would be deleted.
I must send fill out a form with my password, telling them where I live, and a few other things and they will keep my account live. Oh, and I get a new password, too.
And I can do it all by hitting reply.
Sigh.
They don't do that.
It looks quasi-real.
Here's the meat:

"This email is from Windows Live Msn Account and we are sending to all our account user for safety. Due to the anonymous registration of our account, so we are shutting down some accounts and your account was among those to be deleted.  Some will be fooled.
I looked at the source and did a quick mouseover that showed it was from agathaheng.
I sent an email to the real Windows Live Team so someone could send out a warning about this nonsense.
It's very annoying.
I don't like you, Agatha.  I want to say very bad things about you. Please leave me alone.
I hope no one is caught. I expect some will, but I still hope.

That's one eye catching post title. :) I got one of these about a year ago. Some will be fooled, mostly because they are unnerved by the big WARNING!

Good on you for giving Agatha a hard time.

Thanks, Laurita. The dire warning is unnerving. It's easy to get taken in by it.

I would have been tempted to fill it out with all manner of nonsense.

Good for you for reporting it and warning the rest of us!

Bag Lady, tempting as it is they've got you once you hit reply.

I always ignore these. Even if my account gets deleted, I can start a new one fairly soon and I will be rid of all those who know my account and can be more selective.

Oh, it is tempting, though.

Good for you for reporting this.

Good point, Tabor.

Messymimi, that was brilliant.

Oh! I'm glad you sent it in....I have received this a few times and don't seem to be as diligent as you in reporting it.
So THANK YOU.
I don't like Agatha either.

Thanks, Dawn. I bet Agatha isn't very popular. When you get one of this, mark it as a phishing scam.

Well, at least it makes a nice change from the penis-enhancement emails. Maybe I'll forward mine to Agatha.

(Good for you for reporting it!)

Leah J. Utas said...

Crabby, that's what I thought, too.

Wow. It is tempting to fill it out with crap... DoB: not yesterday!

Leah J. Utas said...

"DoB: not yesterday!" Good one, Reb.

A good rule of thumb to consider is that unless an email references your name in the body, ignore it. If they ask for your password, report it.
