Photo-Finish Friday -- Beside The Point

BowSummit2013 014
Columbia Icefields Glacier. Popular, beautiful, receding at a steady pace.

And this is the scene to the immediate left of the glacier. The road takes the buses to the top where tourists board the snowcoach for a glacier tour. It's just as beautiful, but doesn't get nearly the press.

Strange and beautiful.

Mary Anne in Kentucky, where we haven't had glaciers for a very long time.

Aye, Mary Anne.

Sometimes what the travel books don't point out is the most interesting part. Very beautiful.

Very true, Messymimi.

This is so sad. But I heard this winter is to be cold with lots of snow. Perhaps its time for a mini-ice age. There was a definite cooling of temperatures in the late 1400s.

Lovely photos, Leah.

Aye, Barbara. Thanks.

Feeling rather dinosaur-like, as I remember when the glacier was much closer to the road. Who would have thought it would recede that much in our lifetime.

Bag lady, I remember when the toe of the glacier was at the bottom of the hill where the cars park.
It never occurred to me that would change.

Absolutely gorgeous but alarming to read Baggie's comment and your reply. That is frighteningly fast.

It is, Hilary. The markers from the road back to the ice tell a disturbing tale of melt.
