Twofer Tuesday - I’m Afraid I’ve Been Working

I am still reading. I’m so glad. I must confess to a bit of a worry after my reading bug returned. I was afraid it would go again and leave me alone.
It’s still here, it’s still working, and I am enjoying it more than ever.
Along with reading, I’ve knuckled down to, sort of, editing Biting The Dust. I’m doing my best to just fix the obvious errors this round. I still find myself sneaking in a bit of rewriting here and there. I’m fighting the urge to pull on the boots and get after it properly.
They're for after the hard copy reading, I remind me.

These boots were made for writing.

And speaking of being afraid, I segued brilliantly, guess what I’m reading?
Yup, Afraid, by Jack Kilborn. I won this several months back from the wonderful Women of Mystery. It’s been in the TBR pile since about July.
Waiting.
It’s a gripping story, good pacing, and not as gross as I’d feared. Most enjoyable.

Here’s a bit:

“Josh followed Sal’s stare with the flashlight.
It came to rest on the huge man standing next to the window, quietly slow dancing with the naked, mutilated corpse of Maggie Morton.”
- Afraid, Jack Kilborn, Grand Central Publishing, 2009.

From my efforts this week here are two freshly edited sentences from Chapter Two of Biting The Dust.

“Show yourself. I refuse to talk to the disembodied.” Eury’s voice came from her abdomen.
“That might not serve you well someday.”

For more, or to find out how to participate, please see the Women of Mystery.
And thank you for stopping by.

I appreciate it.

Thanks, cousin, for giving us a peek into what you're reading. And thanks even more for the peek into what you're writing!
Love the boots, too!

Thanks so much, dfBag Lady. I really want to put the boots on.

I like the lines especially the ...mutilated corpse of Maggie Morton. And I certainly wouldn't want to talk to a disembodied anything.

David, the corpse bit really gave me a pcture. It's a picture I wish I could shake.

Thanks re: my effort.

Glad you're enjoying AFRAID, even despite the dancing corpses! Also, I'm going to be wearing my own boots- quite similar to your picture actually- for our local Sisters In Crime chapter meeting and holiday party. We're having it a restaurant called Cowgirl which is kitschy and thematic to the max, and the gravy's good, too. You're getting me ready for it!

I'm afraid that afterward my abdomen may be talking, but I'll be mighty embarrassed if anyone answers back, pardner.

Always glad to do my part, Clare. I remember you saying you needed some boots after you saw mine a few months back. Good for you for indulging yourself. Enjoy your party.

Hmm, Afraid sounds scary. But maybe that was the intention? LOL

Can I borrow those boots?

Leah J. Utas said...

Nancy, it kind of is, but I read it as a writer and it didn't bother me that much.

Glad you like the boots. Of course you can borrow them, but they're size 5.

Wow- Mine are only twice as large, and in Men's no less. They might be 9 1/2s not 10, but I got them for my birthday, and they're just right.

Maybe I could wear yours as gloves?

From the photo of the boots and heels, I take it you ride.

Editing and rewriting is the most important part of writing. It helps with filling in those bits forgotten or overlooked.

Leah J. Utas said...

Of course you can, Clare.

Barbara, I've ridden horse thrice. Enjoyed it immensely, but am completely lousy at it. The boots put me in the mood to write the vampire western.
