What Does -40C Look Like?

The heated pet bowl was covered with snow. We use this so the birds can have drinking water when everything else is frozen.

The frost fairies were very busy.

And to answer the question literally:

It's Fahrenheit on the left and Celsius on the right.

Great idea, Leah!

We rarely hit those temps here, but it does happen at least once every couple of years. Typically we'll hit a few days each winter when the weather hits -20something and we have the -40 wind chills. But rarely to we get that real -40. Love the images.

I'd like to suggest clicking on that 2nd photo in particular to get a better look at that beautiful frost pattern.

I didn't need the visuals - I'm here. But great pictures.

Why, Hilary, thanks so much.

The one good thing about the cold is the frost patterns can be quite beautiful.

I think -40C deserves to get its picture taken.
It was apparently -46C here with the windchill yesterday. There's not much of a wind right now, but it's -45C all on its own.
I was outside a few minutes, okay one minute, maybe, and the air was almost too dry to breathe.

Thanks, Reb.

Wow those frost patterns are amazing! (The picture would make great wallpaper, of either the computer or the home variety).

Thanks Leah for sharing, and Hilary, thanks for suggesting we click on the picture, I would have missed how beautiful it was.

I'm glad you enjoyed the work of the frost fairies, Crabby.

Hey! It's -59 in Uranium City Sask. this morning - what are WE complaining about!?
Great photos, dfLeah. The Bag Lady stole your idea (without really knowing it) and took a pic of her thermometer this morning - couldn't resist, because it's never read that temp in her experience. It was hard for her to see, but with the aid of her camera and computer, she could read it!

Oh, my -59C and we're complaining about the -40s. We've gone soft!

Stealing? No, dfBag Lady. That's confirming!

Beautiful frost and great idea, Crabby. I swiped the photo for my background.

I was thinking of putting out a heated waterbowl for our visiting birds. How does that one work, Leah? Batteries or wiring?

Our winter here near NYC has been the mildest since I arrived from Chicago, which even though much colder and hotter at the edges, I never experienced at -40. -30 though... Truly, the people of Uranium City are superheroes!

Our winter here near NYC has been the mildest since I arrived five years ago from Chicago, which even though much colder and hotter at the edges, I never experienced at -40. -20's and -30's though... Truly, the people of Uranium City are superheroes!

Clare2e - It's electric.
We put a large rock in the centre of the bowl so the birdies have a place to perch.
I got it for Christmas 2006 and it is serving us well.

Are you using the frost pic for background? I'm tickled!
