Gratitude Monday - Wild Memories

Coyote and buffalo. Please click to enlarge.

Our Christmas drive yielded many great sights including coyotes. We see them from time to time. It's a treat, though not really a rare one.
We sometime hear their mournful howls in the night here in town. I've grown to enjoy their singing as it reminds me the wilderness is just a short walk outside my door.
Back when I was growing up we had forest all around us and it was filled with all the critters one would expect. We heard and occasionally saw coyotes, timberwolves, moose, deer, lynx, and bear. The sad longing song of the coyote filled many a night and punctuated cold clear winter days. It scared me then.
Today it simply reminds me of a former wild abundance.
I'm grateful to have been surrounded by the creatures of the wood, and today I am grateful when I see them again.

Tough for one coyote to go after buffalo. I miss the country after living in a huge city for so long. I'm close to Lake Ontario which gives some respite for a yearning of wild open spaces. I'm tired of being in a place with wall to wall people, and need that open space Alberta has.

Great photo, dfLeah!
We see coyotes on a regular basis here. They are always cruising through our pasture, trying to lure the Princess out so they can make a meal of her!

Don't see any coyotes here, but do see many deer, foxes, owls, rabbits, skunks, opossum and the occasional bear. I know what you mean when you talk about the sounds of the night.

Hello Barbara, I've lived in cities, too, and it is not for me.
I've got good open spaces around me so that helps.

Hello Tokaiangel, and Happy New Year to you too.
You've made me think and now I have to go look up the plural for lynx.

Hello df Bag Lady, I can imagine how the coyotes must be regular visitors.

Tom, we have skunks here too. One July we had baby skunks in the yard one evening. Very cute.

We have coyotes within earshot, and I have to say I'm very grateful when they STOP howling.

But I'm glad you enjoy their singing!

Growing up I left the windown open to sleep and would hear the coyotes at night, fairly often. I loved that sound, especially a whole bunch of them singing together. It always made me want to join in, and sometimes I did.
Very neat picture!

Crabby, I know they're not to everyone's taste, but I do like them.

Erin, you're not alone. I've howled back a few times myself. Wish I knew what I'd said to them.

Caption for that needs to be something like "caution dusk makes eyes bigger than belly".

Lovely photo Leah. I like the singing too.

LOL, Reb, good one.

Coyotes! I never did blog about this, but I'll tell you here -- on a hike a few weeks ago, I got close to a den of coyotes! I could hear them yipping and howling and then I heard what sounded like young coyotes joining in. I loved hearing them, though I never did see them. :)

What a lovely picture. I hear you about the joy of living so close to the woods and all the wonderful creatures who live there.

Young coyotes? Lucky you!
That must have been quite thrilling.
Glad you like the pic.

We have coyotes in the Chicago NW suburbs. People are warned not to let their small cats and dogs go outside alone at night as some have been grabbed and taken.
