Blog Goes To “L”

Ten things I love or like that begin with the letter “L” from a meme I got from Reb.
She drew the letter for me.

1 Lute – long-necked musical instrument with strings somewhat akin to a guitar but pear-shaped. A luthier is person who makes such instruments.

2 Lustrum – a period of five years. Impress your friends by telling them a lustrum is one-quarter of a score. They will look at you funny.

3 Lapidary – this means working with rocks and stones, usually gemstones, to fix them up and make them pretty. I have a rock tumbler and I’ve collected and finished some lovely stones. It’s fun and most gratifying when a rock can be made to stay shiny.

4 Lapis lazuli – the national gemstone of Chile and a very pretty blue.

5 Lupine - of or like a wolf. I love wolves and it bothers me that they are largely despised. Dogs are descended from wolves. It’s also refers to the genus lupinus, a type of flower.

6 Lycanthropy – a disorder in which the sufferer believes he or she turns into a wolf under the full moon.

7 Ladle – I love the sound of this word. It has a very soothing feel over my tongue when I say it. A ladle is a big, deep spoon with a long handle. It’s used for dipping into big pots of soup or stew or chili, or anything else to be spooned out for eating.

8 Lagomorphs - critters in the bunny family including the pika.

9 Lynx – wild cat smaller than a cougar.

10 Loch – a lake. The most famous is the home of the Loch Ness Monster. Another famous one is Loch Lomond but you’ll never meet your true love there again.

This was so much fun I am going to do another one tomorrow. The Bag Lady drew the letter “X” for me.

Meanwhile, if you want to play may I suggest you pick a letter to do? I am way too lazy to draw a letter out of a hat for you.

Bravo! Well done, cousin.

I, too, think wolves are misunderstood. Humans harbour a deep-seated fear of them stemming, I think, from our primitive roots.

And thanks for the education regarding one-quarter of a score. I had no idea it was called a lustrum.

Can hardly wait to see what you come up with for "X"!!

df Bag Lady, I think you're right about our fear. Wolves are fine critters.
You're welcome re: lustrum. That's a toughie to work into the conversation. I learned it probably 21 years ago and I think I've used it twice.

Lovely job Leah! I agree about the wolves being misunderstood. Fortunately there have been enough people that have taken the time to understand them and other wild animals that we haven't (as a race) managed to wipe them out completely.

Lustrum, sounds good and it is always good to learn a new word. So, is there a word for 1/2 a score? or will I be two score and two lustrums next birthday?

Great words!!!
I love lapis also - very beautiful blue coloring.
Lustrum lustrum lustrum...there, now it is stuck in my head. Thanks for the new word!

Fun stuff leah

Other "L" words that I like (not because they are fancy):
Luck – for obvious reasons
Luxurious- this reminds me of a rather large bath
Lather - this one is funny to me as "worked into a lather"
Lanolin – is a greasy yellow substance secreted by the sebaceous glands of wool-bearing animals
Loquacious - the property of a person or of a system that delivers information quickly and with expertise.

Reb, score simply means a measure of 20 whatevers so half that in years is the plain old boring decade. I'd go with two score and two lustrums. It makes it sound like a fun age. Or, you could proudly state "I am 10 lustrums old."
For more fun give your weight in stone.

Missicat, you're welcome. Isn't lapis beautiful?

Tom, thanks for your list. I thought of luxurious, too, and it gives me the same image.

I love lapis lazuli.. it's just an incredible shade of blue. And I have to agree about wolves. I think they're wonderful critters. Well played. :)

Thanks, Hilary. Glad to know another wolf lover.

I adore all the lapis lazuli in Egyptian objects, and I have NEVER used the eminently functional word LUSTRUM. I'm going to fix that, post haste.

Clare2e, lapis lazuli is among the most beautiful stones. I have some at my computer/writing desk.

Lustrum is one of the truly great words. I hope you get plenty of use out of it.

I was hoping for something more exciting than decade..I will take your suggestion of 10 lustrums though. I don't mention my weight in any measure btw ;)

I know, Reb, If I ever find a better, more exciting word for a double-lustrum I'll let you know.
