The Boots Worked

The North Saskatchewan River at Preacher's Point. The photo has nothing to do with the post. I just like it.

I finished my vampire western yesterday.
I put my boots on for the final push and wrote the final scene just before 11:30 a.m. The manuscript came in at just under 56,000 words. I’d thought at first it would be around 60,000, but toward the end I realized it would be closer to 55,000.
It felt good.
I haven’t written “The End” nor have I used the editing symbol -30- on that last page yet. That glorious moment will come in its own good time.
About a week ago I got an idea for a third book. It grabbed hold of my imagination and it would not let go.
Originally, the vampire western was meant to keep me occupied while my first novel’s first draft cooled off.
I was going to get after editing it. Instead I took a few hours off in the afternoon and then cracked open a fresh file and began working on the third book.
I’ll get the editing done on the first one, and the second one, but for now I’ve got to get something done on the third.

Crabby, they're magic. Thanks. I have a hard time believing I'm on the third ms already. It's great and I'm going to go with it for as long as it lasts.

Thank you for your kind words, Tom

Wow. I'm impressed a movie and a novel. I feel so accomplished when I complete a blog post. I admire your dedication and amazing work ethic.

I love the idea of a vampire western. When it's filmed, can I help with casting? What a hoot!

Pyzahn, thanks, but it's just a novel, not a movie script. Sorry for the misunderstanding. It's the final scene of the manuscript that I finished yesterday. That said, I'd love it if if ever became a movie.

Big congrats! It's very satisfying to finish a draft.

After you've had a chance to do an editing pass or two, let me know if you need a beta reader!

Thanks, Bunnygirl. If I ever get it edited to the point I'd let someone see it, I just might take you up on your beta offer. For now it's a very firstiest first draft.

You go, girl!

I am so impressed that you are working on the third one already.... I haven't worked on my own in forevah!

Leah J. Utas said...

Thanks, df Bag Lady. I'm getting it done only because I don't have any of that infernal "work" to take up my time.

Good for you! And a vampire western sounds excellent. I just finished a rough draft of my western. Now it's time to polish, polish.

Leah J. Utas said...

David, thanks so much.
I should be polishing too, but the lure of another ms is too much.
Best of luck with the rewrites.

Im so excited for you.

do you map out characters visually as well I wonder?

I always have a body tracing (on butcher paper. like a ginerbread person :)) of each main char up on my office wall and I fill it in as I go with their traits etc.

Leah J. Utas said...

I surely will, Hilary. Thanks.

MizFit, thank you. I like your idea of mapping a character. I hadn't thought of it. I keep the character in mind and see him or her.
I think I might steal your method.
