I am thankful that I can cook.
Husband has been away since last Monday morning and that means I've only me to cook for. It also means cleaning up afterward is by only me.
It would be easy to slack off and eat nothing but cereal, or get a pizza, or other such fast food.
But what is the point?I have the skill to prepare food, the food to do it with, and the knowledge that what I cook is considerably better for me than anything I could get commercially prepared.
Commercial food has it's place. I enjoy it on occasion and when it comes to going out to dinner I rarely say no.
But I'd rather make my own and I am grateful that I have this skill.

we are so much alike.
Then we must meet one day.
I am so on board with this idea.
I had to defrost one of my two large deep freezers to make room for more meat, and realized that we have an abundance of food in our house. And for that I am very grateful!
Bag Lady, I'm glad you're well stocked.
It would be a mild form of Hell to have enough food and no clue what to do with it.
Oh yes. You remind me I need to practice this skill more often!!
Good for you. Too many people can but won't cook for themselves, and there is no more basic self care than nourishing yourself with healthy food.
Betty, you'll never go wrong feeding yourself.
Messymimi, thanks. We've bought into the myth that we don't have time. Convenience food purveyors know their marks well.
I agree! Er, except when I walk by Whole Foods three blocks away and they've got all this healthy tempting stuff already cooked... but most days I'm happiest fending for myself. Much cheaper that way!
And btw, if you and Carla meet up one day, I wanna crash that party!
Crabby, I know how tempting it is.
And I'd insist you crash the party.
I'm thankful I can cook...but I have to be honest- I don't like it.
But! I too would crash that party;) (And I promise I would bring something to eat - yes- That I cooked;))
I do tend to slack off when I'm alone.. less mess.. less cleanup.. fewer calories. But less yum factor too.
There's really nothing like food that you can use your own creative skills with. I do like to go out for dinner, too, occasionally. I'm with Bag Lady in that I need to see what's in the bottom of my deep freeze!
I cooked my first meal without assistance (but with advice) when I was five years old. I can't imagine not cooking. I'm surrounded by people who either can't really cook, or who don't cook on a daily basis, and it feels weird. This is the future our feminist foremothers dreamed of, when women didn't have to cook in order to eat, and it's...full of fast food.

Dawn, good for you for doing it anyway. I quite enjoy it myself. We'd have you along in a heartbeat.
Hilary, I'm all for less mess, but I don't cheat on the yum factor.
Redbush, so true. Be careful in the freezer. I did mine a few weeks ago.
Mary Anne, five?! That's a damned fine accomplishment. You must be one hell of a cook.
I have no choice but to cook and I am grateful that I know how. I am even more grateful though when someone takes me out to eat :)
Reb, cooking is one of the best skills ever. I think everyone should know it.
