This is pretty much what it looked like outside my window today, too.
I needed to identify what I was seeing - also thinking Bufflehead but mine was in fact a male Hooded merganser. I think yours might be also. Buffleheads have white bodies. The male Hooded merganser has a tan body.
In any event.. they're lovely birds in a very peaceful setting.

We have a pair of ducks that wander up and down the driveway periodically. All the water in the ditch must have confused them!
