I Thought I’d Get More Done

I’ve been blessed with solitude since late Tuesday afternoon as my husband got called away to work. He might be back today, or it might be tomorrow or even the tomorrow after tomorrow.
I enjoy my time alone and often dream about it when real life gets in the way of writing.
If only I had some time alone, then I’d really get the manuscript moving.

It’s a filthy lie.

Oh don’t get me wrong. I have been writing. I finished a draft of a chapter on Tuesday night fueled by some hot chocolate and Irish Whiskey. I’m not much of a drinker as my body no longer tolerates it well, but I’m writing a memoir. A Wee Sip smoothes the recollecting.

I have all this time during the day to write, yet I find other ways to spend it. I've got a great chance to meditate or do self-hypnosis because I know I won’t be disturbed, but I relax too much. The nap is welcome because I don’t sleep well when my husband is away, but I’m not getting the altered state work done.

Errands take up time as does eating. Keeping up with the household chores takes away from writing although I hardly make any dishes. If I got on a writing hot streak household duties would be the first to go.

Perhaps I need the distraction, or the company, or I need someone or something to ignore. That’s how I treat recipes. I refer to them, but they are guidelines at best. I am much more creative when I’ve got something to actively ignore.

I’ve got the house to myself and no schedule. I should be happy and for the most part I am. But I thought I’d get more writing done.

You've described the paradox of my own life.

The less time I have to write, the more likely I am to have ideas and a burning sense of urgency to get them written.

Plenty of time? The muse falls silent and I can always write "later."

I'd need my day job even if I won the lottery. :-(

It is odd the way unscheduled time gets completely filled up. I have the same problem--I theoretically have tons of time to be working on my novel, but...

I blame my blog, but I suspect that even if I took another blogging holiday the time would get filled up with something else.

Bunnygirl - That's exactly it.

Crabby - It's amazing isn't it? The times zips by.

The Bag Lady knows exactly what you mean. BBB (Back Before Blogging), if the Cowboy was away, the Bag Lady would have a spotless house, but somehow get nothing creative done. Now, her house looks like a Katrina casualty, but she still gets nothing creative done.
Her greatest creative ideas usually occur when she's too busy to write. All those great ideas down the drain because when she has time, the ideas never seem to come back.

I just added a couple of college courses to my already too busy schedule. I questioned my husband before I started..."Dear, do you think I am taking on too much?" (We always talk like this at my house!) He said, "Holly, You always accomplish the most when you are the busiest."

The things that end up by the wayside are things that I didn't really want to do anyway, I guess. I just thought I really wanted to do them- but the proof is in the puddin' so to speak.

I hear that, Baggie. I get my best ideas in the tub, just before bed. If I get up and write, it's good. If I don't they're gone.

Holly, I heard somewhere (I've long forgotten the source) that if you want something done, then give it to a busy person.
I agree, if you didn't want to do it anyway, then it's the first thing you drop.

....that must be why the Bag Lady can't seem to pay her bills on time......she doesn't want to do it.

Oh, so that's why I am a sloth! Thanks for the insight Leah.
