Photo-Finish Friday -- The Rhea-l Thing
These are rheas at the ranch in Uruguay where we ate barbecue-- beef with beef appetizers-- drank good beer and some OMG wine that I will search to the ends of the Earth to have again, and saw a guacho show.
I gave Mike my camera while I went horseback riding and left him to his own devices. He took several pics of the rheas. This is one of my favourites.

**hangs head in shame**
never heard of RHEAS before!
never been to Uruguay.
need to read more
need to git out more and travel!!
Rhea is a crossword puzzle staple word, and a very pretty bird to watch. Our local zoo has a few rheas.
Do you have the name of the wine, and the year? If it came in a labeled bottle, from a winery, and has a year and type, it can be found, if there are any bottles left.
If it is something made locally, well, you will have to plan another trip to Uruguay.
The rheas make me think that might have been what I goggled at in a pasture full of goats yesterday, instead of emu, which was my first thought. I didn't get a very good look, being occupied with not driving off the road. (Checking my dictionary, emus are supposed to have a blue-skinned featherless neck, which I didn't see, so I suppose it was a rhea. To go with all the llamas and alpacas which are getting so popular around here.)
Good luck with the wine.

Carla - rheas are cool. I strongly recommend having a talk with one someday. Uruguay is well worth the trip.
Messymimi - the wine is Tannat, that is, from the Tannat grape. It was an award-winner and it beat some French wines to get there. Uruguay has a strong French influence. It's the second language taught in schools and it shows up in how Montevideo is laid out.
Solarity -Rhea, emu, and ostrich
require a second look from me before I know who's who.
Very cool photo! Next time you go to Uruguay on the hunt for the wine, I'll go with you to help! :)
(Well, I'd LIKE to go with you.....)
dfBag Lady, can you imagine the trouble we'd find if we went on that mission?
I'm with Carla! never heard of Rheas--but now I know.
Thanks, df Leah.

My pleasure, dfTerrie.
I've seen Rheas before! Just down the road from you actually - lol
They have a couple at the Discovery Wildlife Park. This was before I had my camera though, so I am very glad you have photos to share. Good work Mike.
Reb, I didn't know they were so close. Mike got some good pics and had the good fortune to see one of these in the wild. He is tickled silly that you liked the pic and wishes you the scariest Halloween ever. In a good way.
I love your blog. Sorry I don't comment more but I come by quite often. Mostly to drool over the photograhs...yes, that was me.
Thanks, Fifth, both for your kind words and for admitting it was you. Saved me from having to do an icky DNA search.
That's one cool-looking bird. If/when you discover the actual name of that wine, please let us know?
It was an award-winning wine, Hilary. If I ever see it again I'll let you know.
