This is a cacao pod in the wild in Guatemala.
Theobroma Cacao, the scientific name for it means "food of the gods."
Few if any disagree with this designation.

Cool photo. I actually just watched a show about this last night. I knew it grew on trees, but didn't relize what it actually looked like.
Our ancestors were brave to try, whomever they were, and whether it be opening these pods to see if there was anything inside edible or popping mushrooms in their mouths, or nibbling the berries the goats were eating that turned out to be coffee.
Thanks for the informative picture, i'd never seen chocolate on the plant either.

Leah, nice to see what I snack on reguarly for the caffeine instead of drinking coffee. I tend to use the dark chocolate at 86% cocoa.
