"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy."
-Hamlet, Act One, Scene Five
This above all: to thine ownself be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” - (again with the Hamlet)
This is a cacao pod in the wild in Guatemala. Theobroma Cacao, the scientific name for it means "food of the gods."
Few if any disagree with this designation.
Our ancestors were brave to try, whomever they were, and whether it be opening these pods to see if there was anything inside edible or popping mushrooms in their mouths, or nibbling the berries the goats were eating that turned out to be coffee.
Thanks for the informative picture, i'd never seen chocolate on the plant either.

Ahhh, chocolate. Yum.
My only question is who was smart enough to figure out those pods contained something so delicious?
So where's the wrapper?
Bag Lady, I don't know. I wonder that about every food we eat. Who knew?
Good question, Betty.
Cool photo. I actually just watched a show about this last night. I knew it grew on trees, but didn't relize what it actually looked like.

It is in a beautiful wrapper already. Food of the Gods indeed - yum!
Laurita, you'd never know to look at it the treasure it holds inside.
Messmymimi, yes they were. My pleasure. I've eat the slime-covered seeds inside. Interesting flavour.
Aye, Reb. So glad the gods share.
Leah, nice to see what I snack on reguarly for the caffeine instead of drinking coffee. I tend to use the dark chocolate at 86% cocoa.
Food of the gods indeed. Awesome pic, Leah.
Barbara, I'm a convert to dark chocolate myself. As someone noted, it grows on trees and is therefore a vegetable.
Thanks, David.
Food of the gods indeed. This is a religion I could follow. ;)
I've never seen it in pod form either.. so thanks for this, Leah.
It could be my religion, too, Hilary.
You're welcome.
