Photo-Finish Friday -- A Weird Effect

We spent Canada Day in Banff National Park doing a few hikes and then having a picnic at the end of a side road at the top of Bow Pass.
There's a hike to do that takes a person up the peak at the center of the photo.
If you look above the tree line you can see a snow pack.
Our picnic spot.

I point this out because Mike hiked up there while I waited.
I took the following pic of him which, by some oddness, looks like I am shooting downward.
It's weird, but I like it.
If anyone has an explanation I am all ears.

Please click to enlarge the photos.

I shot up, but it looks down.

Happy Birthday, Canada!

I've posted this every Canada Day for a few years now. I love it and I believe it still holds true in many quarters, despite Prime Minister Stephen Harper's best efforts to ruin it in his own image. I am lucky as all get out to live here. Happy Birthday, Canada! Cake and bacon all around!

Canoeing on the Clearwater

Last Sunday Mike and I took the canoe out for a trip down the Clearwater River south of Rocky.
We put in at one bridge about eight or so miles from town and got out at a second bridge about three miles from town.

The water was murky and we found plenty of rapids to enjoy. If you're wondering, the water is quite shallow. We could often touch bottom with the paddles and we scraped gravel a few times.

The river has some tall. dramatic banks with gravity-defying vegetation.

During the trip I couldn't help but think what a Canadian thing this was to do. The country was opened up by explorers and fur traders who traveled by canoe.

We found several islands in the stretch we did.

Someone tried to make river access easier.

The land changed from steep banks to rolling farmland as we neared the second bridge and it brought us back to civilization, both in reality and in our minds.

Happy Canada Day everyone. I hope you get a chance to explore something.

Happy Birthday, Eh!

Canada turns 140 today.

The blue Canadian Rockies are in front of me and the tiger lilies are in full bloom. What more does one need?
