Sandhill Crane

We get sandhill cranes around here. A local lake just a wee bit north and west of is a know breeding site for them.
It's more likely to see them feeding in fields in the evening, but they can be found at any time of the day.
This one is an immature crane. It was having its elevenses in a field just outside of Rocky.

Intent on feeding.

Beautiful. Lucky you to have them come around. Our similar beauty which visits is the Great Blue Heron. All such beautiful birds.

No cranes around here, just egrets.

This guy knows how to pose, doesn't he?

Thanks, Hilary. We're lucky to have them. We get Great Blue Herons here, too. They nest at the same lake.

Messymimi, he was a ham at heart.

Wonderful shots, cousin! I haven't seen any cranes around here yet this year. Lots of geese, with their babies, though.

Thanks, dfBag Lady. We've got plenty of geese and goslings, too. Good to see.

Mary, it's my pleasure.

I grew up in the Platte Valley of Nebraska which is on the migration route for the Sandhill cranes. Now I know where they're going and coming from . . . They figure, by the way, in Richard Powers' novel The Echo Maker.
